The Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Periodontics specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease.

Treatment of gum disease

Periodontal diseases are serious bacterial infections that destroy the attachment fibers and supporting bone that hold your teeth in your mouth. Left untreated, these diseases can lead to tooth loss. Our periodontists are skilled in the detection, evaluation and treatment of periodontal disease.

Bone regeneration

Bone surgery, including bone grafts, is used to rebuild or reshape bone destroyed by periodontal disease. Membranes (filters), bone grafts or tissue-stimulating proteins may be used to encourage your body’s natural ability to regenerate bone and tissue. Thus, the area with the new bone can be restored by a dental implant.

Dental implants

Dental implants are usually placed in the dental office while the patient is under local anesthesia. The implant consists of a small titanium cylinder or screw, which is surgically implanted and serves as a “root” for the crown that will replace the tooth.

Oral and IV sedation

With oral sedation, we provide a pill combined with nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) to comfortably relax you during the procedure. We also use intravenous sedation to ensure a more comfortable but conscious dental experience.

Osseous surgery

Surgery allows the periodontist to access hard-to-reach areas under the gum and along the roots where tartar and plaque have accumulated.

Scaling and root planing

Scaling and root planing is a nonsurgical cleaning that removes tartar deposits on the tooth and root surfaces. A deeper, more aggressive cleaning than you get from a general dentist, this procedure helps gum tissue heal and periodontal pockets to shrink.
