VCU Periodontics and Implantology Fellowship

Overview

This intensive fellowship is designed for non-US-trained dentists and provides a tailored didactic and clinical experience based on the individual fellow’s interest in the areas of advanced periodontics and oral implantology. Fellows will work closely with periodontal residents and knowledgeable faculty.  This professional experience will expand fellow’s knowledge of Periodontics and Implantology to further strengthen their skills, prepare for a successful career in dentistry, and determine their interest in future postgraduate specialty training.

The fellowship is conducted by VCU’s School of Dentistry, Department of Periodontics. To acknowledge competition of the Fellowship, fellows will earn both a Certificate of Completion and VCU Digital Badge from the Department of Periodontics. 

Fellowships starting on July 1 are offered for either 6 months or 12 months. Fellowships starting on January 2 are offered for 6 months only.

Highlights

  • Learn from our periodontal faculty who are experts in their respective fields and leaders nationally and internationally.
  • Work with periodontal faculty and their collaborators on clinical, translational and/or basic science research with the goal of dissemination of findings through publication and/or presentation at a professional meeting(s). 
  • Participate in literature review seminars and case conferences with residents of the Graduate Program in Periodontics to enhance critical thinking and communication skills. 
  • Observe clinical procedures provided within our state-of-the-art Graduate Periodontics Clinic to include exposure to sedation dentistry, periodontics treatment modalities, several implant systems, digital dentistry and lasers. 
  • Engage in hands-on demonstrations of periodontal surgery, lasers in dentistry and implant placement utilizing porcine heads, typodonts and jaw/or models.
  • Participate in the design and fabrication of surgical guides and prostheses via digital scanning, 3D printing and computerized milling technologies within VCU, School of Dentistry’s contemporary digital lab
